History
Our HistoryStepping Stones Montessori School was founded in 1983 by a group of dedicated parents and Montessori educators who insisted on the benefits of a sound, individualized, and continuous Montessori program for their children ages three to twelve years of age. This group of parents and teachers initially rented, then purchased the former home of Kendall College of Art and Design. SSMS includes two buildings at one central campus near downtown Grand Rapids. We are located near the intersection of College Avenue and Leonard St. NE, less than a mile from Michigan Street’s “Medical Hill”. The urban setting has provided accessibility and opportunities in keeping with our goals. Since its inception, Stepping Stones Montessori School has added Infant and Toddler and Before and After School Care Programs. During the past twenty-five years, Stepping Stones has come to be regarded as an outstanding Montessori school, and is the oldest private Montessori school operating in Grand Rapids. The school’s strength is its unique ability to develop the child’s potential in a relaxed, yet challenging atmosphere that promotes academic excellence and encourages a passion for learning. |
